So we've finally started getting new Jeep Renegades in stock this week, and today we got our first 2WD one. And I noticed something interesting.
As we've heard much about, the 4WD Renegade has a "real" 4WD system, the switch for it pictured here:
But what does the 2WD Renegade have in this spot? Well...
The logo of a company famous for making some of the most well-known 4x4 systems in the market. A 4x4 system this car doesn't have.

A Jeep assembled by Fiat on a GM platform.
For some reason, I think this might become known as one of the least reliable vehicles of all time.

It's on the Fiat Small Wide 4x4 platform, shared with the Fiat 500X.
The original Fiat Small platform was a joint development with Opel . The Opel Adam, Corsa, Meriva and Combo are on other variations of the platform.

Huh! I'll be damned...
I've been following the Renegade production since it was first rumored to be a rebadged Fiat Panda. Nowhere did I see mention of them basing it on a partially-GM-designed chassis. This is news to me.
Should be interesting to see what comes of it.
I mean, the Patriot/Compass shares a lot of design specs with the Mistubishi GS platform, but was modified to increase rigidity specifically because they knew it'd be used offroad (sometimes). So I don't doubt that the Renegade chassis got the same audit; but yeah, not a lot of confidence in any of the names involved on that project.

Is the logo on an angle because no 4x4, stuck in a ditch?

Have you gotten any of the manual / 4wd versions in? How are they to drive?

Just 2.4 automatics so far. Haven't had a chance to drive one yet, we just got our first shipment in two days ago and 3 of the 4 are already sold. Those two today were fresh off the truck and hadn't been inspected yet, we're not allowed to drive them until a technician checks them out first.

Inspect them for what? Inquiring minds and all that...because having to inspect a new car sounds like something one would do to a new Lada or Hindustan Ambassador...

The inspection itself is mainly for shipping damage. They don't want anyone messing with them before then because the more mileage that gets put on the car, the easier it is for the shipper to say "no, one of your guys dented it" and get out of paying the bill. We also get the state safety inspection done at this point.
And then there's activating the electrical system. Several of the main fuses are removed so the battery doesn't drain in shipping, and all but the bare essentials are powered down. Putting the fuses in is pretty idiot proof, but in this business you run into some pretty major idiots, so company policy is nobody but the tech messes with it.

I appreciate that they actually made the dial look like a locking diff.
